Why This Recipe Works
The air fryer is the unsung hero of the bread world. Because the heating element is so close to the food and the fan circulates air at high speed, it creates a Maillard reaction (browning) on the dough that is difficult to replicate in a standard oven without using high heat for a long time. This method ensures that every nook and cranny of the breadstick gets a touch of crispiness, while the garlic butter soaks into the dough, preventing it from drying out.
Ingredients
For the Breadsticks:
-
1 lb (450g) pizza dough (homemade or store-bought, at room temperature)
-
All-purpose flour (for dusting)
-
Olive oil spray (or non-stick cooking spray)
For the Garlic Butter:
-
4 tbsp (57g) unsalted butter, melted
-
4 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 tbsp garlic paste)
-
1 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped (plus extra for garnish)
-
1/2 tsp salt
-
1/4 tsp black pepper
-
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
For Topping (Optional but Recommended):
-
1/4 cup (25g) grated Parmesan cheese
-
Sea salt flakes, for finishing
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
If your pizza dough is refrigerated, let it sit on a lightly floured countertop for at least 30 minutes. Cold dough is difficult to stretch and will shrink in the air fryer. Once it has come to room temperature, divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a rope approximately 6 to 7 inches long. Place them on a piece of parchment paper or a lightly floured baking sheet while you prepare the butter.
Step 2: Make the Garlic Butter
In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter. Add the minced garlic, fresh parsley, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir to combine. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to allow the garlic to infuse into the butter. Note: Do not skip the resting time; raw garlic can be harsh, but letting it sit in the warm butter mellows the flavor.
Step 3: Coat the Breadsticks
Using a pastry brush, liberally brush each dough rope with the garlic butter. Ensure you get all sides, as this will prevent the dough from sticking to the basket and adds flavor to every bite. If you have a favorite silicone brush, now is the time to use it, as it handles the butter well without shedding bristles. Reserve about 1 tablespoon of the garlic butter for brushing after cooking.
Step 4: Arrange in the Air Fryer
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with olive oil to prevent sticking. Place the breadsticks in the basket in a single layer. Do not overcrowd. Depending on the size of your air fryer (most standard 5-6 quart models), you will likely need to work in two batches. Leave a little space between each breadstick to allow air to circulate, ensuring they crisp up evenly.
Step 5: Air Fry
Set your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) . Cook for 6 to 8 minutes, flipping the breadsticks halfway through the cooking time (at about the 3-4 minute mark). The breadsticks are done when they are golden brown on the outside and puffed up. If you are adding Parmesan cheese, sprinkle it on during the last 2 minutes of cooking to prevent it from burning.
Step 6: Finish and Serve
Immediately upon removing the breadsticks from the air fryer, brush them with the reserved garlic butter. This adds a final layer of glossy flavor. Sprinkle with sea salt flakes and additional fresh parsley. Serve warm with marinara sauce, alfredo, or your favorite pizza sauce for dipping.
Intensity & Timing Guide
| Phase | Time | Intensity Level | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dough Prep | 5 mins | Low | Rolling and shaping the dough is simple; no heavy lifting required. |
| Butter Prep | 5 mins | Low | Melting butter and mincing garlic. Use a garlic press to lower effort. |
| Air Frying | 6-8 mins | Low | Requires monitoring to flip halfway. Set a timer to prevent burning. |
| Total Active Time | 10 mins | Easy | Perfect for weeknight dinners when you want a high-reward side dish. |
